Microban
1 What is the Microban protection?
Microban technology is a built-in antimicrobial protection for solid materials, surfaces and fibres. Microban increases the protection of manufactured goods against damaging microorganisms such as bacteria and molds, potential sources of stains, odors and product deterioration.
2 How does Microban protection work?
The Microban protection is incorporated into the product as part of the production process. Whenever microorganisms come in contact with a surface, the Microban protection penetrates their cell walls and disrupts their functions, putting an end to their action, growth and reproduction.
3 What are the benefits of built-in Microban protection?
Microban protection provides a permanent fight against the growth of microorganisms liable to cause stains and odors and to damage goods. Microban protection facilitates the cleaning of your products and helps to keep them cleaner and fresher between cleanings.
4 What type of microorganisms does Microban protection fight?
The Microban antimicrobial protection is effective against most common bacteria, yeasts, molds and fungi causing stains, odors and product deterioration. However, it does not offer protection against phytopathogenic microorganisms.
5 How do we know that Microban protection is safe to use?
The Microban technology has undergone extensive testing in an independent laboratory and its long-term use has been proven safe over and over again. It has received the EPA’s approval for all of its uses. Microban’s adjuvants can be found in medical, industrial and standard products manufactured by major companies around the world.
6 When does the Microban protection start working?
The Microban protection starts working as soon as a microorganism comes in contact with the surface of the product. Its effectiveness permanently maintains a bio-burden lower than the one that would be expected in a product that does not have the Microban antimicrobial protection. Under favourable conditions, the population of microorganisms can double every twenty minutes on an untreated surface! However, the Microban technology is not a disinfectant and does not replace normal cleaning practices.
7 How long does the Microban protection last?
The built-in Microban antimicrobial protection does not wear-off. For all of its useful lifespan, your product will be protected against microorganisms and remain cleaner and fresher much longer.
8 Has any product protected by Microban ever been the source of illnesses?
Extensive testing and long-term use have proven Microban protection to be safe. While it is pretty much impossible to claim that it will never be responsible for an allergic reaction, a negative effect is highly unlikely. Microban’s adjuvants are used in very small quantities measured in parts per million.
9 Does the use of antimicrobial agents cause the proliferation of resistant strains of microorganisms?
No. After having been used all over the world for over thirty years in several medical, industrial and standard products, there has been no evidence of the development of resistant strains.
10 How is the Microban protection incorporated into the Silestone surfacing?
The Microban protection is incorporated during the manufacturing process of Silestone surfacing and will remain effective for the entire useful lifespan of the surfacing.
11 Can Microban protection be incorporated into the Silestone surfacing already in my house?
No. Microban can only be incorporated into the product during the manufacturing process.
12 What are the benefits of Silestone surfacing with built-in Microban protection?
It offers a continuous antimicrobial cleaning action that reduces the spread of bacteria and molds responsible for stains and odors.
13 Is the Silestone surfacing without built-in Microban protection presently on the market unsuitable?
Absolutely not! As Silestone surfacing is non-porous, any bacteria on the surface remain on the surface and are easily eliminated. Silestone surfacing with Microban now fights against bacteria and assures an even greater level of cleanliness of your product’s surface.
14 When will the Silestone surfacing with built-in Microban protection be available?
Its introduction to the market is scheduled for the end of the first quarter of 2005.
15 Should I keep on cleaning my Silestone countertop?
Yes. Microban offers an extra protection against microorganisms and makes the cleaning of Silestone surfacing easier.
16 Will the Microban protection built into my Silestone surfacing wear-off with time?
No. The antimicrobial Microban protection is incorporated into the surfacing during its manufacturing process and it will remain in your countertop or other surface for its full lifespan.
17 Do other types of kitchen or bathroom countertops or quartz surfacing have the built-in Microban protection?
No. Silestone has entered into an exclusive contract with Microban International and its surfacing is the ONLY ONE that offers this antimicrobial protection.
18 Will the Silestone surfacing with built-in Microban have the same colors as the existing Silestone surfacing?
Yes.
